A serial car thief who stole £12,500 of cars and electrical equipment has been banned.
Finlay Mcleay broke into a house on Aberdeen’s Shaw Road, making off with a set of car keys and the vehicle.
He also grabbed a computer, phone and a handbag in the raid on August 13 last year.
The 25-year-old later stole a friend’s car after staying with her, but crashed into a bollard.
Mcleay previously admitted the offences, and appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday for sentencing.
The court heard that in the most recent incident, he had been staying with a friend on Bankhead Avenue in Bucksburn on January 25.
She woke up and discovered her keys were missing and the vehicle gone.
Shortly afterwards, the car was found abandoned on Lintmill Terrace having been driven into a bollard.
When police traced the owner, she said she did not know who had taken it.
However, when Mcleay when to a police station for an unrelated matter, he was charged with the theft of the car.
In the first incident, a homeowner discovered their car keys and vehicle gone at about 7.30am on August 13 last year.
Mcleay was traced on Cummings Park Drive later that morning and detained by the police.
Fiscal depute Karen Dow said: “The value of the items was £12,517.
“£11,250 was recovered, there was damage to the car of approximately £1,000.”
Representing Mcleay, of Formartine Road in Aberdeen, defence agent Graeme Murray said: “He realises he is at a crossroads in his life.”
Sheriff Marion McDonald ordered him to carry out 175 hours of unpaid work, placed him under supervision for two years and banned him from holding or obtaining a driving licence for six months.
