A north-east firefighter has made history by being the first woman to drive an engine in a small Eastern European country.
Nicolle Beattie, from Buckie, made the mammoth 2,500 mile journey from her home to Moldova to deliver two appliances packed with vital equipment.
A bemused Ms Beattie, who was the first female firefighter to take on the role in her own home town, was even interviewed by Moldovan journalists on their national news for the feat in March.
Setting off from the outskirts of London, the 33-year-old who works in both Buckie and Aberdeen, joined other English firefighters to journey across Europe with the supplies as part of Operation Florian.
The charity was set up by British firefighters in 1995 with the aim of sharing firefighting knowledge and expertise with crews across the world.
Once safely arrived in Moldova, she proudly presented two fire engines and a plethora of life-saving equipment to a delighted fire crew with her fellow volunteers.
Ms Beattie said: “When I was driving through the streets I definitely got some double-takes from people.
“I’d never driven on the other side of the road before – and I was now doing it in a fire engine – so I was a bit nervous.
“But it was an unbelievable experience and so humbling.
“We had two appliances jam-packed full of stuff – breathing apparatus equipment, cutting gear and personal protective equipment as well.
“The Moldovan crew were delighted and were so friendly and welcoming.
“I didn’t know the British volunteers I travelled with when we first set off, but now we are friends for life.
“I would recommend this to anyone, it’s such a great feeling being able to help. It’s a really great opportunity.”
David Farries, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s deputy assistant chief officer for the North of Scotland, said: “Charities like Operation Florian carry out essential work and Nicolle should be very proud of the role she has played in helping others.
“The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is the fourth largest fire service in the world and firefighters like Nicolle prove we are committed to sharing our skills, experience and expertise with everyone.”
