An Aberdeen charity founder has been invited the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Myles Edwards, founder of Gathimba Edwards Foundation (GEF) which helps disadvantaged children in Kenya, was nominated to attend by Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeen Barney Crockett.
Every lord lieutenant – representatives of the Queen – were given the chance to nominate someone from their area, as a request from the soon-to-be-married couple to ensure there is a broad range of backgrounds and ages at Windsor Castle to enjoy their day.
Mr Crockett, who is also the city’s lord provost first met Mr Edwards when he gave a presentation on the work of GEF last year.
He said: “When I met Myles last year I was immediately struck by his engaging manner, leadership skills and his charitable endeavours, which have seen him set up a charity, which is making a genuine difference to children in Kenya.
“Myles gives so much to others that his nomination is a token of our appreciation of the work he and his charity does. He’s a wonderful ambassador for Aberdeen and a great example to us all.”
The foundation aims to help disadvantaged children get a start in life, whether it be support through shelter, clothing or education. It also provides counselling and seminars for families.
Mr Edwards is now one of 1,200 members of the public who have received a special invitation to be part of the Royal wedding celebrations at Windsor Castle on May 19.
Mr Edwards said: “It was a huge surprise and honour to receive the invitation from the lord provost.
“To be invited to such a prestigious event means a huge amount to me and all of us at GEF are humbled to receive such recognition for our work.”
