Aberdeenshire Council will look into banning dogs from all its schools, play parks and cemeteries.
Ellon councillor Isobel Davidson brought the proposal to yesterday’s infrastructure services committee meeting.
The plan would prevent dog owners from bringing their animals into school grounds to collect their children and prevent them from going to youngsters’ play parks across the north-east.
In her submission to the council, Mrs Davidson, a self-employed wildlife consultant, said while there were signs at some school playgrounds warning of “no dogs”, there was no official policy on the matter.
North Kincardine councillor Ian Mollison asked officers to consider a similar ban in cemeteries in the area.
Stephen Archer, the authority’s infrastructure boss, said a number of options were open to the council including a by-law or adopting a new policy.
Councillors agreed officers would prepare a report for area committees and further talks would be held after the summer.
