A teenage motorist was last night in hospital fighting for his life following a north-east road crash.

The white Vauxhall Corsa he was driving was involved in a collision on the unclassified road between Cruden Bay and Gask, near North Teuchan, at around 10.50pm on Saturday evening.

Police said the 17-year-old ,who was the only person in the car, had to be taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

Officers closed the road for several hours while they investigated the crash and are now appealing for witnesses.

At the scene yesterday, shattered glass and small pieces of debris were strewn across the carriageway and into a nearby field. A fence post had also been destroyed.

Last night, road policing sergeant Colin Matheson appealed for anyone who saw the car involved at the time of the crash or before it to come forward

He said: “We would like to hear from anyone who saw a white Vauxhall Corsa at the time of the collision or in the area beforehand.

“Anyone with any information should contact Police Scotland on 101.”

Peterhead and South Cruden councillor Stephen Smith said it was “quite rare” for there to be an accident on this stretch of road.

He said: “I’m very sorry to hear this and hope the individual concerned makes a swift recovery.

“Unlike other side roads, this road is fairly wide as it is the main route to the Stoneyhill Landfill site so accidents on it are quite rare.

“If anyone has any information which could assist about the accident then I’d urge them to contact the police.”

This was the third serious crash on north-east roads this month following previous incidents near Mintlaw and Hatton.

On Saturday May 13 a 22-year-old man was critically injured following a collision on the A952 Fraserburgh to Mintlaw road between a Mazda 3 and a Land Rover Discovery.

Last Tuesday morning a man was left with “life-changing” injuries and had to be cut out of a vehicle following a crash on the A90 Peterhead to Aberdeen road near Hatton.

He was travelling in a Volkswagen caddy van which was involved in a collision with an Audi.
