Two people were rescued from a stricken yacht after it ran aground – before even leaving the harbour.
Lifeboat and coastguard crews were called to Peterhead Harbour to help remove the boat from the rocks at the breakwater.
Meanwhile, a nearby supply ship launched one of its rescue rafts to take the stranded man and woman, both in their 50s, to dry land.
Despite the drama unfolding in Peterhead, it was the Fraserburgh RNLI team that assisted with the operation due to crew shortages.
The volunteers had to wait for the high tide to move the boat from the rocks, before towing it back into Peterhead marina shortly after 3pm.
Vic Sutherland, coxswain with Fraserburgh lifeboat, said the people on board were “unfortunate” to be caught out by the tide.
“As they left the marina and with the tide going back it didn’t take long for the boat to settle on the rocks,” he said.
“The two crew were quite experienced and knowledgeable, it’s just very unfortunate that this has happened to them.
“Before we arrived on scene a supply boat had launched a rescue boat and it went alongside the yacht and took them off.
“There were no injuries whatsoever and both parties are safe and well.”
An Aberdeen Coastguard spokesman said the alarm had been raised at about 10.30am yesterday.
He said: “Just after 10.30am the yacht ran aground just outside the marina at the break water.
“Fraserburgh lifeboat was called out and two people from the yacht are on board the lifeboat.
“We also had our coastguard teams at the scene.
“The keel of the vessel was on the rocks and it was later towed back to the marina.”
An RNLI spokesman said they had to call on the volunteers from Fraserburgh because of a lack of available crew to man the Peterhead lifeboat.
He said: “We had a little bit of a gap in coxswain cover in Peterhead.
“From 9am-4pm we are short of coxswains.
“It is just an unfortunate piece of timing.”
