Thick fog which caused severe traffic disruption along the north-east coastline yesterday is expected to continue for the next few days – but clear skies and sunshine have been forecast inland.
Low visibility was reported throughout Aberdeen and elsewhere close to the sea yesterday morning.
A lorry and a car collided at around 6.45am on Auchmill Road, resulting in lengthy tailbacks after the emergency services closed the route for almost an hour.
And just five minutes later at 6.50am, police were called to a two car smash on the A92 Stonehaven to Montrose road near Catterline.
Nobody was seriously injured in the two incidents.
The Met Office has forecast similar foggy conditions both inland and along the coast for much of today.
However, sunshine is expected to be shining across most of inland Aberdeenshire, Moray, the Highlands, Orkney and the Western Isles on Wednesday and Thursday – with only north-eastern coastlines still covered with fog.
Highs of 18C are forecast inland in communities such as Braemar and Aberlour on Wednesday, however thermometers in Aberdeen and Peterhead, where heavy cloud cover is expected, are not forecast to go above 11C.
And on Thursday, the Met Office is predicting even hotter temperatures inland, with highs of 21C in Fort Augustus, Forres and Caithness – but the north-east coast will again be left with slightly colder temperatures of around 12C under the fog during the morning.
Gillian Keith from the Met Office in Aberdeen said: “There’s a large risk of sea fog for the next few days, particularly along the east coast, however there will be some breaks to give some sunshine.
“Nut in many places close to the sea in the north-east, there’s very little chances that we’ll have the completely cloud-free days that we’re expecting inland.
“The further inland you are, the clearer it will be over the next few days, but there is a risk of that cloud coming further inland in some areas.
“The Moray coast will struggle as well over the next few days with cloud, but there’s a good chance it will clear up in some areas.”
Sunshine has been forecast for almost all of Scotland on Thursday evening, including Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles.
