A Special Olympics gold medallist has been rewarded for her contribution to sport with a British Empire Medal (BEM).
Charlotte MacDonald, of Whitecairns, was introduced to dressage at the age of 12 and quickly rose up the equestrian ranks.
After years of training with the Gordon Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), near Inverurie, she took home a gold and silver medal at the 2015 Special Olympics in Los Angeles.
When she is not on a horse, the 26-year-old can usually be found performing with her drama group in Ellon, or fundraising to help others receive the same support she has with the RDA.
Her mum, Carol Gawski, said: “It’s tremendous for her to have this recognition, particularly in light of her having a learning disability.
“It’s a harder struggle than most for her but I think she’s truly deserving of it.
“She is dedicated to what she does and always gives it her all – and Gordon RDA has been wonderful and so supportive.”
Ms MacDonald next has her sights set on the Special Olympics GB Anniversary Games, which are being held in Stirling in August.
While the games will not include any horse-riding events, Miss Gawski said it will not stop her daughter from competing.
“They aren’t doing any equestrian competition so Charlotte has been invited to try out for the cycling team, which she’s really enjoying.
“They do some training at the Duthie Park and everyone is just doing their best.
“I’m just so proud of her. It is unbelievable she’s getting this medal.”
