An Aberdeen woman is being appointed a Member of the British Empire for services to stroke patients after 22 years of commitment.
Mairi Chrystal, head of nurse and therapist services for Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland (CHSS), will be made an MBE in the 2018 Queen’s birthday honours.
As an instrumental part in the development of CHSS’s stroke nurse service, Mrs Chrystal helped implement support for discharged hospital stroke patients.
She said: “I’m not accepting this for myself, I am accepting the MBE for CHSS who had the vision to recognise the need for the stroke nurse service, our colleagues in the NHS and every one of the stroke nurse service team.
“Most importantly I am accepting the MBE on behalf of the thousands of patients and their families the service has supported.
“So many people are an inspiration in how they have moved forward with their lives after having a stroke.
“I truly believe part of this is down to getting the right support after the hospital.”
CHSS director of services, Margaret Somerville, said: “Mairi has shaped the service to become what it is today – in the words of patients: ‘no one else seems to understand like Mairi’.”
