One of the most important events in the north-east’s cultural calendar commenced yesterday with the launch of the Gray’s School of Art Degree Show.
More than 150 graduating students from all sorts of creative disciplines, including 3D design, contemporary art practice, fashion, textiles, photography and more finally unveiled their masterpieces for a private viewing last night.
This year’s show will be open to the public at Robert Gordon University’s Garthdee Campus from today until Sunday, June 24, weekdays from 10am to 8pm and weekends from 10am to 5pm.
The annual event, which has been sponsored by BP for the past 15 years, provides young artists and creatives with the chance to make a name for themselves and get a head start on their career.
Throughout the evening, students from all backgrounds received special wards in recognition of their efforts.
This year’s coveted BP Design Award was secured by 3D design academic Anna Younie, who created ceramic pieces inspired by her home in Orkney.
And the BP Fine Art Award was won by Contemporary Art Practice student Jake Shepherd, whose work was designed to bring attention to the increase of digital technology in modern society.
Libby Curtis, the head of Gray’s School of Art, said the annual degree show is a key part of Aberdeen’s cultural tapestry.
She said: “Once again we have an extremely rich show planned which will showcase the hard work, creativity and commitment of our artists and designers here at Gray’s.
“The Degree Show is a fantastic celebration of the work of the students, and plans an important role in contributing towards Aberdeen’s varied and continuously developing cultural offering.
“We are very grateful to BP for its support over the years in helping make the Degree Show into a wonderful occasion that it is.
“The BP Awards for both Fine Art and Design are a great opportunity for our students, and really help recognise and encourage emerging talent in the north-east.”
