A teenager who died after falling ill in the street has been described as a “beautiful boy” who will be desperately missed.
Zaine Grieve collapsed on Saturday, but despite passers-by rushing to his aid, he could not be saved.
The 14-year-old, from Portlethen, was “extremely popular” and enjoyed playing football with friends.
It is the second tragedy to hit the family in a matter of months, after Zaine’s mother’s partner died in December.
In a statement yesterday, they said: “We have been left absolutely devastated by the death of Zaine, who was a much-loved son and brother.
“Zaine was extremely popular and he will be missed by all his family and many friends.
“We would like to thank the passers-by who stopped and tried their best to save Zaine’s life, as well as the emergency services who attended.
“We would also like to thank everyone who has sent us messages of support.”
Floral tributes with heartfelt messages were left on the town’s School Brae and their words encapsulated the sadness which has enveloped the community.
One of them said: “Words can’t express the hole you will leave. Going to miss you like mad. Never forgotten.”
Another read: “Will miss you forever, everyone will. Fly high. Love you Zaine.”
Tributes were also made online to a “beautiful boy who will be sadly missed”.
North Kincardine councillor Ian Mollison said: “This has left the community in shock and has saddened everyone.
“For such a young life to be lost so tragically is just dreadful.
“I am sure that everyone’s thoughts go out to the family and friends of the teenager.”
A spokesman for Aberdeenshire Council added: “Our thoughts are with family and friends at this very difficult time.
“The loss of any young person is particularly tragic and we will be looking to provide support to the local community.”
