A new route has been confirmed for the 2018 Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run.
Last year’s event was attended by 8,000 people, who travelled from as far as Singapore, South Africa and the United States.
This year’s race will introduce a variety of new elements for participants. Runners will still take in iconic landmarks such as Marischal College and Aberdeen Art Gallery, but they will also pass through Seaton Park and Old Aberdeen for the first time.
Runners experienced congestion at a Pittodrie bend of the race last year, and organisers have now decided to cut out that turning point of the race to allow for a more streamlined route.
Jamie Still, event manager at the Great Run Company, said: “After the inaugural Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run, we listened to runners’ feedback and have made changes that will enhance their overall event experience.
“The updated 2018 route will maintain the iconic city centre attractions whilst improving the route for runners.
“Last year’s Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run was a celebration of everything that is great about the city, bringing together people of all ages who took part for fun, fitness and fundraising for many local charities, and we’re excited to be returning in 2018.”
In another update for 2018, participants will receive a medal and t-shirt based on which challenge they complete – whether it be the 10k, half marathon distance or fun run.
Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader Councillor Jenny Laing said she was “excited” about the new additions to route.
She said: “We have worked closely with The Great Run Company and local partners to ensure the Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run has evolved for 2018 and bringing the route through Seaton Park will be a wonderful showcase for the beautiful parks and gardens that Aberdeen is so proud.”
“Aberdeen is a dynamic city which offers a great deal for both residents and visitors. We are working closely with local and national partners to raise the city’s profile through our Aberdeen 365 programme and ambitious City Centre Masterplan projects, with the aim of strengthening Aberdeen’s position as a must-visit destination for high-profile cultural and sporting events.”
Entries are open for all events, which take place on August 26.
