A pensioner had to be airlifted to hospital after her vintage car was involved in a north-east road smash.

The collision between a white Morris Minor and a Renault van happened on the A952 Mintlaw to Fraserburgh road close to the Newark junction shortly before 8am yesterday.

An ambulance service helicopter was summoned to take the woman to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment. It is not thought her injuries are life-threatening.

The road was closed in both directions, but reopened around two hours later.

A police statement, released at the time of the incident, said the road would be shut for around an hour and thanked motorists in the area for their patience.

It said: “Police are currently in attendance at a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A952 between Mintlaw and Fraserburgh.

“The road is closed at the Newark junction and will be for at least an hour.

“We would like to thank you for your patience.”

A police spokeswoman later confirmed that the road had reopened and the types of vehicles that were involved.

She said: “We got a call at about 8am and the road was reopened at around 9.50am. It was a two-vehicle accident with a white Morris Minor and Renault van.”

An ambulance service spokesman confirmed the details of their operation.

He said: “We received a call at 7.55am to attend a road traffic collision on the A952 between Mintlaw and Fraserburgh.

“We dispatched three ambulances and our Helimed air ambulance to the scene. One female patient in her 60s was airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.”

It is not the first crash on this route this year.

In May, a young motorist was left with serious injuries after his Mazda 3 collided with a Land Rover Discovery on the A952 Mintlaw to Fraserburgh road, near Hardyards.

The 22-year-old man was left with “life-threatening” injuries and the 62-year-old woman driving the jeep suffered minor injuries.
