A group of former Gordon Highlanders made a significant donation to the Gordon Highlanders Museum after hosting a fundraising golf tournament.
Veterans from the historic regiment and their friends travelled from all across Scotland to the McDonald Golf Club in Ellon to drive up vital funds for the charity, which is currently seeking to raise £300,000 over three years.
Yesterday Jim Leask, a former Warrant Officer who served in Northern Ireland and visited around 20 countries over his 22 years with the regiment, handed the £325 raised at the competition to bosses at the Aberdeen-based museum.
Mr Leask, who turns 70 years old today, said: “I’m really happy to be handing over all this money to the museum.
“We played our last big match together in Dundee and after that I said I would be willing to host a tournament up in Ellon.
“Everyone is welcome to our competitions and you don’t have to be a golfer as it’s all about enjoying yourself, having a cup of tea, enjoying a meal and spending time with old comrades.
“It’s important to catch up with all your old pals that you served with. It’s our way of keeping the regiment alive.
“I had a lot of assistance sorting out the competition, but I would like to particularly thank another ex- Gordon Highlander, Stewart Clark, who really helped a lot.”
Another charity golf tournament in aid of the museum is being organised by Mr Leask and his fellow veterans in Aboyne this September.
Bryan Snelling, the chief executive of the Gordon Highlanders Museum, said the future of the regiment depends on the generous support of people like Mr Leask.
He said the fundraising campaign had already secured about £230,000.
