A north-east mum has launched a campaign to let all mums-to-be experience a home water birth free of charge.
Freya Wilson wants to buy three inflatable birthing pools which she would hire out for free, after realising that not all parents have easy access to one.
Mrs Wilson, of Chapelton of Elsick, set up a home birth support group after having her son at home last year. So far, 85 people from across Grampian have joined.
She spent £150 on a pool rental of her own, and has since got feedback from other members of the group to see how to move the scheme forward.
She has now launched a crowdfunder to raise £600 to get the project off the ground.
Mrs Wilson said: “When I was expecting my first child, there was no such support network available for mums looking to meet other mums to share stories and advice on home births.
“I started the group in March and we already have 85 members.
“A water birth naturally creates a hands off environment for the mum where she can have her own space and let her body take over. I felt very safe with my husband by the side of the pool and my two midwifes watching over me.
“I care passionately about supporting women to have the home birth they desire.
“So buying three pools to hire out will mean mums of all backgrounds will be able to access a birth pool for their home birth and not have to worry about the associated cost which is around £150 from one of the online companies.
Currently, a birthing pool is available within the labour ward at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and private companies can hire out inflatable pools that are easily set up at home.
Under Mrs Wilson’s plans, the pools would be rented out free of charge, but would incur a cost of providing a pool liner for hygiene reasons.
