A busy Aberdeen street has been brightened up by a local artist as part of a new scheme.
Alison Chandler, from Johnshaven, completed her colourful creation of a doorway surrounded by clouds, on a wall by the grassy square where Bridge Street meets College Street.
It is the first piece of land to be improved as a result of Aberdeen Inspired’s Adopt an Area project, which aims to improve neglected parts of the city.
The Aberdeen Inspired team recently brought together a team of artists, school children and community members to update the once derelict space on South College Street, which had often been criticised for its unsightly appearance.
Ms Chandler’s work, The Way Through, signifies her journey to find hope after suddenly being diagnosed with cancer in 2016.
“On the path people are encouraged to leave behind stones, which represent letting go of burdens,” she said.
“To convey this, Aberdeen Inspired will work with local students to paint pebbles and place them on the path leading up to my painting.
“It has been great being involved with the project and creating this painting.”
Alongside Ms Chandler’s art, the new and improved grassy area will include a wildflower meadow, meandering path and orchard trees planted by local school children.
Angela Joss, project manager at Aberdeen Inspired, said: “When Alison was suddenly diagnosed with cancer she surrounded herself with uplifting friends in order to keep positive.
“At one stage I suddenly thought we should work together on an art exhibition – and the journey to working on this art piece came from that.
“Now, with the help of Mary Butterworth from the Painted Doors project, Alison has created a beautiful and life affirming piece of art that will hopefully inspire passer-by’s and encourage footfall in the city.”
