A north-east man jumped behind the wheel of his mother’s car two days after being banned from the roads – in the mistaken belief the disqualification would not have been processed.
Steven Mcintyre appeared at the Justice of the Peace Court in Aberdeen on Monday when he was disqualified for six months from driving after totting up speeding convictions.
On that occasion he was also ordered to carry out 40 hours of unpaid work.
But on Wednesday the temptation became too strong for him and, believing his ban would not have taken effect, decided to drive his mother’s car.
He was subsequently picked up by police on Station Road in Woodside and found to be disqualified and driving with no insurance.
The 20-year-old was detained by officers and appeared from custody at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday where he confessed to the offence.
Representing Mcintyre, of Huntly Street, defence agent Ian Woodward-Nutt said his client was naive.
He said: “He foolishly decided to take his mother’s car for a brief run.
“He was not going anywhere in particular.
“My client did not think disqualification would have gone through by that time.
“He is a young man who is quite naive as to the ways of the world.”
Sheriff Charlotte Coutts extended his ban from driving to a year and ordered him to carry out a further 40 hours of unpaid work.
