A north-east offshore worker has been banned from the roads and ordered to carry out unpaid work after attempting to dodge a drink driving conviction.
Kevin McAndrew had been out drinking with his parents at a birthday party on May 12 this year and Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard he’d planned to take a taxi home.
After a few drinks, however, the 39-year-old jumped back behind the wheel of his Ford Focus and set off for home.
He was picked up by police on Aberdeen’s Golf Road at 12.15am and asked to provide his details.
The court heard McAndrew refused to identify himself to Police Constable Jodi Young and was taken to Kittybrewster police station.
Nearly two hours later he refused to give a breath sample to ascertain whether he had been driving while over the legal limit.
He subsequently admitted the offences and returned to court yesterday for sentencing.
Representing him, defence agent Ian Woodward-Nutt said his client was prepared to accept forfeiture of his car, worth around £800, as part of his punishment.
Sheriff Charlotte Coutts banned McAndrew, of Keppleshills Road in Bucksburn, from driving for three years and ordered him to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work.
She also ordered forfeiture of the vehicle.
