Councillors could approve the demolition of a north-east abattoir, just days after the developers said its replacement might not go ahead.

ANM Group has applied for planning permission in principle to demolish the North Street meat processor and offices on North Street, Inverurie.

The firm is also looking for permission to build 70-80 homes in its place.

A new £17million abattoir has already been approved for the expanded Thainstone Business Centre.

The current facility has been in use for about 100 years and has been expanded a number of times.

The Garioch area committee will meet on Tuesday to discuss the scheme, which the authority has recommended for approval.

However the meeting will come just days after ANM’s partner Scotbeef Inverurie, which would run the facility, said planning conditions imposed by the Garioch area committee threatened to de-rail the proposals.

Aberdeenshire Council approved the proposals earlier in the summer, but only on the basis both the Thainstone and Port Elphinstone roundabouts are upgraded.

However Scotbeef has said that if it is forced to meet these conditions it might have to abandon the new abattoir project all together which would mean the North Street site might have to stay open.

During a consultation process, several objectors claimed the new abattoir would increase traffic near the business park.

However, Scotbeef has argued any extra traffic will be at busy times, and claims the roundabout changes are unnecessary.
