Lifeboat crews were called in to action today after an offshore helicopter picked up a suspected Mayday signal.
The aircraft was about four miles off the coast, at around 9.10am, when it began receiving transmissions from a distress beacon.
The all-weather lifeboat Bon Accord was launched in response but was unable to detect the signal during a search lasting almost an hour.
It was stood down at around 10am when it was discovered that a personal locator beacon had been inadvertently activated during maintenance at a facility at Aberdeen Airport.
The call-out was Aberdeen Lifeboat’s 23rd of 2018.
A coastguard spokeswoman said: “We received the report of an emergency locator transmitter picked up by a passing helicopter.
“It turned out to be a false alarm.”
