Cycling effort to raise funds after happy chemo experience for north-east man’s wife

A north-east man has taken to two wheels to raise almost £5,000 for the nurses who helped his late wife look forward to her chemotherapy treatments.

David Bruce’s wife Fiona died in June this year after a short battle with cancer.

To thank the Friends of Anchor nurses at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, he cycled from Dyce to Peterhead with a group of friends.

The 60-year-old, who lives in the Blue Toon, also held a quiz night in a pub to raise extra funds.

He is handing a cheque for £4,700 to the nurses this week.

Mr Bruce said: “The nurses in the Anchor unit were brilliant – so I decided to do it for them to say thank you.

“I’ve never had experience with cancer but my wife actually used to look forward to her chemo treatments as she loved the nurses.

“You would think going in there she would have been all doom and gloom but she loved seeing them each time.

“I want to thank everyone in the unit for the care they gave Fiona and everyone who donated as she would have been chuffed we raised this much.

“After I did it my legs were in bits and I decided that would be me but now the pain has worn off now and I’ll definitely be doing it again.”
