Aberdeen charity boss ‘burst into tears’ after free accommodation boost

An Aberdeen charity has been given a major boost after being given free accommodation.

David Forbes, who set up Future Choices to reduce social isolation for adults with disabilities, burst into tears after Inchgarth Community Centre decided to waive the fees.

Inchgarth Community Centre has committed to providing permanent free access to Future Choices to run its services within their building, which will save the social enterprise more than £4,500 annually.

The charity, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, aims to reduce social isolation for adults with disabilities by hosting recreational events alongside other adults who have additional needs.

Mr Forbes founded Future Choices in 2008 after a local day centre was shut down due to council cuts.

Rather than be left with nothing to provide support for disabled people in the area, he  formed the charity to replace a wide gap in the local community. It has been operating out of the community centre for seven years, but has faced an uphill battle to cover its growing costs.

Mr Forbes said: “When I heard the news, I burst into tears and was speechless.

“It was so humbling to receive the news – especially for our milestone anniversary.

“Without the help of Inchgarth we couldn’t continue. The financial hurdles and operational costs of running the charity are huge now, so this makes a great difference.”

Paul O’Connor, manager of the centre and chairman of Garthdee Community Council, was glad to provide support for the group after seeing the difference it makes within the community.

He said: “Our long-term commitment and support allows the charity to concentrate on what’s most important – helping their members who are some of the city’s most socially isolated people where Future Choices is their lifeline, social outlet and place of friendship.

“I see the colossal impact this charity makes weekly on the lives of it’s members, it is inspiring.

“So, to support these two campaigns, this is our commitment to Future Choices.

“They will receive permanent long-term free access at £4,500 per year, and the sponsorship to give their members monthly entertainment with Inchgarth picking up the tab.”

The charity will meet on Tuesdays from 11am-2pm at their new home in Inchgarth Community Centre.

Future Choices is holding an anniversary celebration on October 13 at the Palm Court Hotel in Aberdeen.

Tickets can be purchased by contacting Mr Forbes on 07821 700046.
