A former north-east jail has been nominated for a tourism award a year after claiming another major industry gong.
Peterhead Prison was built in 1888 and for the next 125 years it housed some of the country’s most violent men.
But a new prison was built in 2013 to improve conditions for inmates with facilities for the 21st century.
The former Victorian jail was then reopened as a museum and has since become one of the leading attractions in the region also attracting visitors from abroad.
It was nominated for several accolades at the Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Awards last year and ended up winning the innovation in tourism prize.
This year it is a finalist in the best visitor attraction section.
The popular museum faces stiff competition from Macduff Aquarium and the Bennachie Visitor Centre.
Museum manager Alex Geddes said staff at the attraction were “delighted” to be in the running once again.
He said the nomination was down to the hard work of the dedicated team.
Mr Geddes said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted in the Best Visitor Attraction section of the Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Awards in 2018.
“To get to this stage is a great achievement for us and I am delighted not only for the museum, but for the team who work hard to ensure our visitors have a great experience within these walls.
“We are of course up against great attractions on the night and want to take this opportunity to wish everyone the best of luck on the big day.”
The prison is one of 38 finalists announced as part of this year’s award scheme. The winners, who will be announced next month, will represent the region in the national tourism awards in spring.
The Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Awards event will be held at the Ardoe House Hotel on Friday, November 23.
