A man has been charged after the front of a petrol station was extensively damaged following a crash yesterday morning.
The front of the Spar shop at the Watermill Filling Station in Fraserburgh was discovered caved in following an incident believed to have happened at 2am.
Police said the damage was caused by a vehicle colliding with the front of the building on Banff Road.
They said a 40-year-old man has now been charged and reported to the procurator fiscal for various road traffic offences.
Local councillor and chairman of the Fraserburgh and District Community Safety Group, Brian Topping, said he was grateful the incident had not been worse.
He said: “Had the vehicle collided with one of the tanks or another part of the petrol station it could have caused an explosion and been catastrophic.
“It’s someone’s property which has been damaged and due to the fact it’s a petrol station, heaven forbid, it could have been a whole lot worse.
“It appears no-one was injured.
“This will be a devastating and worrying time for the owner and we should let the police carry out their investigations to find out what really happened.”
Police were called out to deal with the incident following reports of a collision yesterday morning.
No further details of the vehicle involved in the incident were given.
A police spokeswoman said: “Officers were made aware of an incident that took place at around 2am yesterday morning whereby a vehicle collided with the front of Watermill Filling Station in Fraserburgh.
“A 40-year-old man was subsequently charged in connection with the incident and will be reported to the procurator fiscal for various road traffic offences.”
The station owner declined to comment on the incident yesterday.
