A north-east couple who share the same birthday celebrated 60 years of marriage yesterday, surrounded by family and friends.
Former Drumoak residents Bill and Betty Abernethy, both 83, were married in Aberchirder.
Now living in Inverbervie, the couple were “delighted” with a special card from the Queen to mark the occasion and a bouquet of flowers from local councillor Leigh Wilson.
Last night, Mrs Abernethy put their long-lasting marriage down to “give and take” and added: “Of course everyone has their ups and downs, but you need to look after each other and work hard at it.
“I always say that we are twins; because we were born on the same day – it’s quite unusual.
“We have had a lovely day and were surprised by a visit from our son and his family, who live abroad.”
The couple first met at a dance in the Aberchirder hall and now have three children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Councillor Leigh Wilson said: “It was a privilege to present Mr and Mrs Abernethy with a gift today on behalf of Aberdeenshire Council. I have known the family for some time and to reach a diamond anniversary is a significant achievement which is worthy of recognition and celebration.”
