Local people would tell you they have always known it was a jewel in the crown.
And now, Turriff has been acclaimed as having Scotland’s most beautiful high street.
That was the verdict from the public who voted in the 2018 Scotland’s Town Partnership competition and lauded the north-east community for its local heritage, beauty and unique atmosphere.

The shortlist also included Cupar, Denny, Inverurie, Jedburgh and Linlithgow.
Voting was close with Turriff winning the accolade, Linlithgow coming second and Inverurie being ranked third.
The judges took a broad approach to the word ‘beautiful’, focusing on factors such as horticultural achievement, public realm, environmental responsibility, access, inclusivity and community participation.
The winning entry, submitted by Turriff Business Association, highlighted the town’s numerous heritage sites, horticultural beauty and community initiatives, including the iconic Turra Coo.
The entry said: “Turriff‘s Main Street is very lucky to host a vibrant, unique shopping experience, a wonderful heritage and a high standard of care and cleanliness that reflects the pride we have in our town.”
Vice-chairman of the association, Rose Logan, said: “On behalf of us and the Turriff community, I would like to say a huge thank you to all those who voted for us in the Scotland’s Most Beautiful High Street competition.
“The standard of entries was very high and we are absolutely delighted to have won this award.
“There is a tremendous community spirit and involvement within Turriff and the surrounding district and, without their support, this achievement would not have been possible.”
The town was also shortlisted along with five other Scottish towns in the Great British High Street Awards last week.
Banff and Buchan MP, David Duguid, supported that bid at Lancaster House in London.
He said: “I am extremely proud that my home town has won this award. Turriff high street has become well known in my constituency as a thriving town centre.
“There are many factors which contribute to this.
“There is a real sense of civic pride in the town and the hard work and commitment of the local Business Association, community council and volunteers cannot be overstated.”
Local councillor Alastair Forsyth said: “I am delighted that Turriff has won the award.
“It is well deserved and I trust that the benefits of the hard work that went into the enterprise will result in a major boost to morale and prosperity.”
