A man has been arrested after police in Aberdeen made one of their largest ever drugs hauls.

Officers recovered £1million of ecstasy after swooping on a property on Thomson Street, in the Rosemount area of the city, on Wednesday night.

The haul of Class A drugs, also known as MDMA, weighed 45kg – seven stone.

Last night, police confirmed a 22-year-old man had been arrested for his alleged involvement in illegally importing and supplying the substances.

It believed the raid was a result of a tip-off.

Concerned neighbours said they were surprised by what officers found during their raid.

One man, who did not want to be named, told The Press and Journal: “It’s a very quiet street that we live on.

“You really wouldn’t expect this sort of thing to happen in this part of Rosemount.”

However another on the street said it was not completely out of the blue.

“A friend of mine that stays across the road has witnessed a few things out of the ordinary, but I haven’t been aware of anything personally”, he said.

“The news hasn’t come as a big shock as the police have knocked on my door a couple of times regarding similar incidents in the past six months.”

Local councillor Bill Cormie said: “That is a huge amount of drugs and thank goodness the police managed to find the source and take them off the streets.

“There’s been a lot of drug activity in Rosemount over the last three or four months and I’m sure everyone is relieved that these have been recovered.”

Fellow councillor and North East MSP Tom Mason praised the work of the emergency services for successfully clamping down on the city’s drugs trade.

He said: “This is an enormous seizure that will have a major impact on the supply of illegal drugs in Aberdeen.

“Credit must go to our local police force for cracking down on this behaviour.

“It sends a clear message that drug dealers in Aberdeen will be met with the full force of the law.”

Last night, a police spokeswoman said: “Officers from Police Scotland and the National Crime Agency have arrested one man, aged 22, in the Rosemount area of Aberdeen as a result of his alleged involvement in the illegal importation and being concerned in the supplying of Class A controlled drugs.

“As a result of the investigation and enforcement action over 45 kilograms of MDMA (ecstasy) with an estimated street value of over £1,000,000 has been recovered.”

She added the case has now been referred to the procurator fiscal.
