A thug has been locked up for 25 months for punching a boxer unconscious during a “square go” – only two months after being released from prison for another serious assault.
Rhian Doran “repeatedly” struck Mike Florence during an attack on Diamond Street in Aberdeen on September 9.
The 20-year-old was sent back behind bars yesterday at Aberdeen Sheriff Court after admitting rendering Mr Florence unconscious, severely injuring him and leaving him permanently disfigured.
The court heard that the accused – who appeared on remand from Polmont – and the complainer had “an altercation” in a nightclub which led a fracas between two groups of men.
Fiscal Eilidh Wright said: “A phone call was made to arrange a situation where a fight could occur.
“Police describe it as a ‘square go’ where everybody appears to be involved and, during the course of that, Doran struck a male and knocked him to the ground.”
Defence agent Alex Burn said Mr Florence was a trained boxer who “feels some responsibility for what happened”.
Sheriff William Summers said the suggestion that the matter could be dealt with in any manner other than with a custodial sentence was “hopelessly optimistic”.
He told the accused: “You have a background of serious assault convictions and this was a largely unprovoked and vicious, sustained assault.”
Doran was detained in 2017 for attacking two strangers in Aberdeen with a five-inch knife while high on drink and drugs – slashing one on the face.
In 2015, he was found guilty of assaulting a 61-year-old woman to her severe injury while trying to steal her handbag.
