A north-east cancer charity has launched a campaign to raise £2million.

Friends of Anchor will unveil its appeal this weekend, with a community event in Union Square in Aberdeen on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

The Anchored Together takeover of the centre will offer plenty of activities for children, with facepainting, a sticker trail, colouring competition and activity booklets – as well as a silent disco for all ages.

But, more importantly, the event will offer the public a look into the new £32million cancer and haematology centre which is scheduled to open its doors in 2021.

The charity has pledged £2million for The Anchor Centre, which will be located at Foresterhill Health Campus.

Their donation will equip the building with top-of-the-range fixtures, a dedicated research suite and teaching facility, an FoA complementary therapy room, a teenage and young adult room, patient information space and a coffee lounge area.

This weekend’s event aims to engage the public with the multimillion-pound centre, which will be the first of its kind in Scotland, and is estimated to be used by 65,000 patients a year.

People will be able to watch a visual fly-through of the new facility, in addition to committing to play their part in the fundraising journey.

Fundraising and development director, Sarah-Jane Hogg, said: “The Anchored Together appeal is our most ambitious campaign to date.

“We’re passionate and excited to be fundraising for what will be an incredible legacy and asset for patients for this region, including Orkney and Shetland.

“To raise a sum of this magnitude, we will need the help of people right across the north-east.

“We’re excited to bring people up to speed with how their precious donations may be spent, and letting people know more about the project which will benefit those close to us who will face a cancer or haematology diagnosis.”
