People affected by cancer are being asked to take on the Relay for Life event in Peterhead this year to help organisers smash their £2 million target.
It is the 13th relay to take place in the Blue Toon to raise money for the Cancer Research UK charity.
Kind-hearted competitors have helped raise a total of £1,801,524 through taking part since it launched in the town.
Registered teams fundraise throughout the year then compete in various games at a 24-hour event taking turns to walk round a track.
Ahead of the day they can organise various fundraising events such as quizzes and bake sales.
Eva Legge, from the Legens team, has taken part in the Relay for Life Peterhead for more than a decade.
She said: “My family and I started relaying the year after my husband was diagnosed with stomach cancer.
“He unfortunately lost his battle the following year but this inspired us all to keep raising as much money as possible, to help battle this horrible disease.
“We had previously lost, and have since lost, several other family members and close friends to this disease and we hope that with our help, and the help of other fundraisers, that we can bring about a cure for this disease.”
Statistics show that around 3,200 people in east Aberdeenshire alone are diagnosed with, and treated for cancer, every year.
Sadly 1,500 of those patients unfortunately lose their battle with the disease.
Cancer Research UK hopes the money raised will help it achieve its target of 3 in 4 people diagnosed with the illness surviving by 2040.
Event chairwoman Lorraine Coleman is only too familiar with the struggle families are facing.
She underwent chemotherapy for breast cancer and has been taking part in the event since 2009, now serving as the chairwoman.
She said: “So far we’ve got 23 teams signed up – last year we had 31 so I’m hoping we’re on track to have just as many if not more.
“We just encourage everyone to do their best and raise as much as they can – people should remember this covers all of Aberdeenshire so we would love to see more people from further out like Inverurie and Braemar.
“It’s a wonderful experience being with your team and part of a global movement volunteering to fight the cause.”
The 24 hour event will be held at Lord Catto Park, Peterhead, on July 6 and 7.
