Snow and ice expected across the north and north-east over the weekend

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across the north and north-east this weekend.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across the north and north-east this weekend.

Police have warned motorists across the north and north-east to be braced for wintry weather over the weekend.

The force last night issued the travel advice after the Met Office announced a yellow weather warning amid expectations that snow and ice will affect the region.

And people living on the north-east coast have been advised to expect strong blasts of wind.

Police believe the lingering effects could cause trouble for drivers during peak travel times on Monday morning.

Inspector David Hynd said: “We are advising all drivers to exercise extra caution throughout the Highlands and Islands, Moray and Aberdeenshire as conditions may be hazardous due to snow and ice.

“There is also the potential for high winds around coastal areas and exposed routes, particularly in the north-east.”

The warning on the Met Office’s website states that “icy surfaces on roads and pavements could lead to an increased likelihood of accidents and injuries”.

It also advised that transport is “likely to be affected by snow, leading to potentially longer journey times”.

Drivers have been encouraged to make sure they and their vehicles are “adequately prepared for the conditions” by ensuring they have sufficient fuel and supplies such as warm clothing, food and water in the event they are delayed for several hours.

Police have also urged people to charge their mobile phones and plan their routes, as well as alternative routes.
