A north-east care home has been awarded an “adequate” rating by care inspectors and ordered to improve its services.
Overdon Care Home, owned and managed by Cubanhall Ltd, is located on the outskirts of Kintore in Aberdeenshire.
Several areas were classed as needing improvement by inspectors, when they visited on January 18.
One set of care notes which contained no care plans or risk assessments was branded as “unsafe practice” in their report.
The findings, published by the Care Inspectorate, read: “This resident had specific care needs and we read in daily progress records that there was an inconsistency in how their needs were being met.
“The quality of care planning was inconsistent.”
The report also stated: “For residents who were less able and with reduced abilities to communicate, there were many missed opportunities and we observed some people sit for long periods without meaningful interaction.”
In addition, inspectors took issue with a number of structural elements at Overdon Care Home such as a “cluttered” sitting room, an “inaccessible” book case and poor lighting.
It was also acknowledged that a segment of a stair carpet posed a “serious trip hazard” to the home’s 17 residents.
The care home operators were able to provide inspectors with a date for its replacement when they were asked about it.
During the inspection, six residents and two relatives of those at the home were interviewed, providing mixed feedback.
One relative said: “My relative has been in the home for just over nine months and I have total appreciation to each and every one of the staff involved in her care.
“Nothing is too much trouble for any member of staff”.
However, a resident stated: “”I sit here and brood a lot. Not much going on.”
The inspectors did praise the cleanliness of the facility, the efforts of staff and the appearance of residents, who “looked well.”
Overdon Care Home has provided a written set of aims and objectives that details the philosophy of care provided within the service.
This includes providing its residents with “a secure, relaxed, and homely environment in which their care, wellbeing, and comfort are of prime importance”.
