Lifeboats were deployed to an incident in Bridge of Don tonight.
UPDATE: Coastguard have confirmed that the incident was a false alarm, and that “a sighting of seals” may have spurred the rescue mission.
After a search of the area, near Brig O Balgownie, nothing was found.
A coastguard spokeswoman said: “It was a false alarm with good intent.
“There were a number of seals in the water, and we believe someone might have mistaken one for a body.”
Teams from Aberdeen, Stonehaven and Cruden Bay were involved in the rescue.
Three coastguard units, a rescue helicopter from Inverness, as well as crews from the fire service, ambulance service and police officers were also in attendance.
A fire spokeswoman said: “We were called to the Bridge of Don area after receiving reports of a water-rescue incident.
“We sent two appliances to the scene, and have now stood down.”
In addition, police confirmed that they made use of a thermal imaging camera during the search.
A coastguard spokesman said: “We were called to an incident in Bridge of Don at 4.45pm this afternoon.
