A minute’s silence will be held at a football game this weekend in honour of Scotland’s longest serving councillor who tirelessly promoted and protected sports.
Sydney Mair fought to improve opportunities for non-academic youngsters who excelled in other fields such as sports.
The Macduff councillor – who represented the area for 48 years – died on February 28 at the age of 84.

Now one of the groups that benefited from his help, Deveronvale Football Club, has revealed it wants to remember him with a minute’s silence at this weekend’s match.
Posting online, the club wrote: “It was with great sadness that the club learned of the passing of Princess Royal Trust Chairman Sydney Mair on Thursday, February 28.
“Sydney had long been involved with Princess Royal Park and Deveronvale and was a stalwart of the wider Banff and Macduff community for many years.
“Despite reaching his 80s, Sydney remained a strong local voice and a proponent of the need for an active local community and put his heart and soul into the issues that he felt were important.
“The thoughts of all at Deveronvale at this very sad time are with Sydney’s family and the club will hold a minute’s silence in honour of Sydney’s memory and achievements ahead of the match.”
Deveronvale will be taking on Cove Rangers on Saturday at Princess Royal Park, Banff.
