Some of the world’s greatest cyclists will once again get into gear and race through the streets of Aberdeen when the celebrated OVO Energy Tour Series returns to the city.
The televised event is returning for the third year on May 16, with many of the city’s streets expected to close as bikers pass some of the Granite City’s most iconic landmarks, including Marischal College, the art gallery and music hall.
Drawing thousands of spectators over the past two years, it is hoped that the sight of some of the top cyclists in the country will also provide an economic boost to the struggling city centre.
There will also be amateur events, offering less experienced participants a chance to share the road with some of their heroes.
Last year, triple Olympic gold-medallist Ed Clancy won the men’s Tour Series race on Thursday and lauded Aberdeen as his favourite route, while home rider Neah Evans, from Cuminestown, led her team to victory in the women’s race.
Motherwell will host the series for a fourth successive year on Tuesday, May 14 with Aberdeen following two days later. Highlights will be shown on ITV 4.
City council co-leader Jenny Laing said: “The last two years have been a huge success, attracting great crowds and showcasing the city worldwide.

Craig Burn, chief executive of Scottish Cycling, said: “Major events like this are paramount to ensuring we capture the hearts and minds of people across the country and inspire more people to get on a bike, be it for sport, recreation or transport.”
Tour series race director Mick Bennett said: “We are delighted to be returning to Motherwell and Aberdeen this May.
“The Scottish week of the OVO Energy Tour Series has become a cornerstone of the calendar in recent years, with both events enjoying great support from spectators and the wide range of participants taking part in the Scottish cycling support events.
“We look forward to more of the same this May.”
