An award-winning north-east attraction is about to be showcased on the national stage.

Peterhead Prison Museum will be making its debut at a major tourism convention when it opens next week.

It is the first time the former Victorian jail will be involved in the Visit Scotland Expo which takes place in Glasgow on April 10 and 11.

The museum will be one of the organisations from the region taking part alongside tourism marketing body Visit Aberdeenshire.

Peterhead Prison Museum manager Alex Geddes said it was a great opportunity to be given the chance to tell its story on a bigger scale.

He said: “We are delighted to join our colleagues from Visit Aberdeenshire at this prestigious event and look forward to promoting our museum to the wider travel trade members.

“This coincides with our admissions and gift shop refurbishment and cafe refit and of course with our latest development of the lifeboat museum now well underway this looks like it will be another exciting year for the museum team.”

Yvonne Cook, Visit Aberdeenshire’s head of tourism development, said the event in Glasgow was the ideal way for the museum and other tourism businesses to make new connections.

She said: “As a visitor destination the north-east of Scotland has an enormous growth opportunity thanks to our excellent accommodation supply and the abundance of quality activities and attractions.

“With demand exceeding supply in other parts of the country, there is an opportunity for the north-east to increase its share of the market.

“One important way to achieve that is working with the travel trade and attracting a high volume of business in the form of group and individual travel, which is why it is so important for Visit Aberdeenshire to attend the Visit Scotland Expo as it allows us and our 12 local tourism business stand partners to make new travel trade contacts, and strengthen existing relationships.”

Peterhead Prison
Museum was voted the best visitor attraction at the Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Awards in 2018.

The museum opened in 2016 and has attracted thousands of visitors, becoming a top visitor site in the town.
