A north-east maritime training school is offering an officer training course in the Merchant Navy.
The Peterhead-based Scottish Maritime Academy is working alongside Clyde Marine Training on the three-year sponsored training scheme.
It will offer recruits the chance to become a deck officer and the programme will begin in September.
The role is crucial for ships because the deck officer is responsible for the safe navigation of the vessel, cargo loading and discharge, ship stability, communications and the maintenance of the hull and deck equipment.
Linda Hope, centre of manager of the Scottish Maritime Academy, said they were “delighted” to be able to offer the new initiative.
She said: “We are delighted to be able to offer this programme and hope to attract applicants from all over the north of Scotland. It is an exciting mix of study and sea time and offers a dynamic career path leading to the deck officer qualification on seagoing ships of the Merchant Navy.
“The college study element is based in Peterhead and is delivered in three phases allowing cadets to apply, develop and consolidate knowledge and skills at sea.”
