It is a throwback to the days when Aberdeen FC weren’t just a force in Scottish football, but a club to be reckoned with all across Europe.
And now, news has emerged that one of the special silver medals which commemorated so many achievements by the Pittodrie club between 1982 and 1984 is going up for auction on Saturday.
The item, which will go under the hammer in Sauchen, near Alford, highlights not just the victories by Alex Ferguson’s side in the European Cup-Winners Cup and Super Cup over Real Madrid and Hamburg, respectively.
But it also commemorates the club’s Scottish Cup victories in 1982, 1983 and 1984 and their league championship success in the 1983-84 season.
A spokesman for the auction house said he expected Dons supporters to be keen to get their hands on the artefact.
Tony Gauci said: “We know that there are thousands of Aberdeen fans throughout the north-east – and all over the world – so I am sure there will be plenty of interest in this silver medal which was presented to the Dons engraved with the words ‘Aberdeen Football Club Scottish Cup Winners Medal 1982, 1983 and 1984 and European Team of the Year 1983.’ It is in its original Presentation box.”
Interested bidders can view the item the day before and leave a commission bid, or take part online or on the phone.
The sale is happening just a few months after a shirt worn by Aberdeen legend Alex McLeish when the Dons triumphed in the European Cup-Winners Cup in 1983 sold for £4,700 at an auction in England.
