Dozens of pensioners could remain evacuated overnight after a fire at an Aberdeenshire care home today.
Staff and residents were forced to flee the Ythanvale building in Ellon after the roof caught alight.
Fire crews were called there just after noon.
More than 20 firefighters remain at the home in the town’s Park Road, cutting away parts of the roof and ensuring the smoke can be vented from the premises.
It is understood that “contingency plans” have been put in place should the shaken residents be unable to return there today.
They are now being looked after in the Ellon Resource Centre, awaiting word on whether the building will be safe to occupy again by the evening.
A decision is expected within the next few hours.
The fire started in a nearby shed and spread to the main building.
Four fire engines and a height appliance were called to the scene.
A further support vehicle – to restock oxygen supplies for the firefighter’s breathing gear – was also requested.
