Planning permission has been granted to build a new cemetery and memorial garden on the outskirts of Ellon.
Space for almost 1,200 graves and a further 300 lairs for cremated remains has been earmarked north of the town at Auchterellon Farm.
Plans for the site were drawn up as the current cemetery there is “rapidly approaching” full capacity, with no options for expansion.
They were approved by members of the Formartine Area Committee yesterday.
The application also included a 36-space car park, memorial garden, footpaths and benches.
And there is the potential for the site to double or even quadruple in size if further phases are given the go ahead in the future.
The land was at the centre of controversy in 2017 when drinks firm BrewDog tried to buy it from Aberdeenshire Council.
It argued that the local authority was wanting to charge 60 times the value for the site, but the council said the firm had “vastly” underestimated the cost.
