The £350,000 overhaul of an Aberdeen leisure centre has been named as the best project of its kind in the UK – beating rivals which had undergone multi-million-pound revamps.
Get Active at Sheddocksley has taken a top prize at the Community Leisure UK Awards.
The complex on Springhill Road re-opened in November after weeks of renovations, offering a 60-station fitness suite, functional training room and group exercise studio.
The scheme has now been named Leisure Capital Project of the Year, ahead of a £20 million sports facility in Warrington which had been tipped as the “hot favourite”.
Elsewhere the chairwoman of the city’s Active Girls Community, 15-year-old Aimee Work, won the Outstanding Individual Volunteer award for championing her gender’s participation in physical activity.
Sport Aberdeen managing director Alistair Robertson said: “I could not be prouder of everyone in Sport Aberdeen for helping to put our hard work on a UK stage.
“These prestigious awards are just reward for great team work and the partnership-focused approach that we take to all we do.”
He added: “I am also absolutely thrilled for Aimee too.
“It is fitting tribute for what she has achieved at such a young age and she is an ambassador that the city should cherish.”
