Aberdeen care home residents to compete in sporting challenges

Care home residents in Aberdeen will compete in a “golden games” sports tournament next week.

The games are organised by the Active Aberdeen Partnership,  and were started in 2011 with five activities and 80 participants.

However, by 2018 the event ballooned to include 89 activities held over 10 days with 425 participants.

One of the primary reasons for the expansion is the popularity of the Care Home Pentathlon, which invites residents from care homes across the city to come together to compete in a series of five activities in a bid to win trophies and medals.

Hayley Buchan, wellbeing coordinator and dementia ambassador for the Aberdeen Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “The Care Home Pentathlon is such an important part of the Golden Games.

“It gives people who may not be able to take part in the other activities on offer during the festival the chance to be a part of this inclusive event.”

There are a number of other activities and challenges at the games which residents can take part in, including weightlifting and floor basketball.

This year’s Golden Games Care Home Pentathlon will take place on Thursday at Westburn Park.
