An Aberdeen hotel is raising money to buy a “life-saving” defibrillator to benefit its guests and the residents who live nearby.
The Mariner Hotel, on Great Western Road, has launched the £1,295 drive to cover the costs of purchasing the machine and training to staff on how to use it.
A defibrillator delivers a dose of electric current to the heart to re-establish a normal rhythm after a heart attack or other cardiac problem.
Communities across the north-east have taken to fundraising to install the devices in public places to provide support to people suffering heart complications while they await an ambulance.
Hotel owner, Mike Edwards, said: “We have a group of regulars from the Fit Like Joggers group who suggested that getting a defibrillator would be a great thing for the community.
“We are a 24-hour operation so basing it here would mean it could be quickly used at any time really.
“The Marcliffe had to use their one recently and I understand that was life-saving for the person involved.
“We are hosting a quiz night on Sunday and hoping to raise around £500 which will all be put forward for the drive.
“The total isn’t just for the device itself but to provide training to staff in how to use it effectively.”
Airyhall, Broomhill and Garthdee councillor, Douglas Lumsden, said: “I’m a regular at the hotel and this is the sort of thing that shows the community spirit of the business.
“Fundraising for this important piece of equipment, which will benefit the whole community, is really commendable.”
