A special day of fun has been organised this weekend in Aberdeen to celebrate a major Islamic festival.

Eid in the Garden organised by voluntary group Aberdeen Muslims will take place this Sunday at Rubislaw Terrace Gardens from noon onwards.

It is a celebration of Eid-al-Fitr, signalling the end Ramadan in the Islamic calendar.

Sumon Hoque, founder of the Aberdeen Muslims group, said: “Eid in the Garden has been a firm favourite in Aberdeen’s exciting events calendar since its inception in 2013 – this will be the first year when the actual event is on the same weekend as Eid-al-Fitr, so we expect it to be a record breaking year in terms of turnout.

“If the sun is out, our forecast is to have a few thousand attending.”

The organisers, Aberdeen Muslims, have partnered up with national charity Human Appeal.

Javaid Ullah, the Scottish fundraising manager for the charity said: “Human Appeal is really excited to come to Aberdeen and support Eid in the Garden, it is a great opportunity for us to let everyone know about the charitable work we do locally, nationally and internationally.”

The event is free to attend and has a mixture of world food, BBQ, large zone for children with variety of activities, henna painting, magicians and interesting information stalls about Islam.

Kevin Stewart, Aberdeen Central MSP, said: “The event showcases the many cultures within the diverse Muslim and wider community and it is a great way for us Scots to celebrate the end of Ramadan together.”
