A north-east Highland Games has been cancelled due to a water-logged pitch.
Organisers of the Corgarff event have been forced to scrap Saturday’s sports because the heavy rainfall of recent weeks has turned the games field into a bog.
**Corgarff Games CANCELLED**Unfortunately the difficult decision has been taken to cancel Corgarff Games this year…
This is the only time the games, one of the first on the summer calendar, has had to be cancelled in 40 years, apart from once during the foot and mouth disease outbreak of the 2000s.
Though it is one of the smaller scale games on the calendar, it does attract entries from far and wide for its hill race and piping contests.
Jock Edwards, games secretary, said: “It’s disappointing because this year was our 40th, but you wouldn’t be able to use the field and the forecast for the weekend isn’t any better.
“It’s quite a local games but, because it’s one of the first, we do get a lot of entries for piping and the hill race.
“We also hold a charity duck race but the way the River Don is the ducks would end up in the North Sea.”
The games was first held 104 years ago but was cancelled on the outbreak of the Second World War, before it was re-launched in 1979.
