Aberdeenshire Council is launching a trial recycling scheme in Ellon and Peterhead to educate local people on what plastic material can and cannot be recycled.
The one-year pilot project will take place at the Ellon and Peterhead household recycling centres, where rigid plastic items can be deposited.
As part of the initiative, Aberdeenshire Council will provide Wood Recyclability with rigid plastic discarded by members of the public, with the different types sorted before being recycled.
Aberdeenshire Council’s waste manager, Ros Baxter, said: “This one year trial will allow us to monitor the levels of contamination, tonnages being collected and to ascertain the viability of end processes and the user market to determine whether a recycling scheme on a wider basis is feasible.
“As well as being more environmentally friendly, recycling will cost the council far less than landfill, providing a financial benefit.
