A 20-year-old man has been charged with murder following an incident in a north-east village.
Emergency services were called to Cuminestown, near Turriff, at around 4.45am yesterday.
An injured 51-year-old man was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary but later died.
Police said the man charged is expected to appear at court tomorrow.
A 22-year-old man who was also held in connection with the murder has been released pending further inquiries.
Police also named the man who died as Anthony McGladrigan.
His family paid tribute to him in a statement through the police.
They said: “Tony was loved, brave and an amazing son, husband, father, brother and exceptional friend. He will be missed every day. The family are devastated and would like privacy at this difficult time.”
