Hours and staff at north-east recycling centres could be slashed, a leaked letter has revealed.
Staff at operators SUEZ have received letters saying they were undertaking a review of the centres after the city council asked them to find £50,000 of savings each year.
It says “the review is in the context of severe financial pressures on the council”.
The proposals include closing the East Tullos facility on Wednesdays and Pitmedden on Wednesdays and Thursdays, with two staff potentially lost.
Consultation with staff is due to finish next month.
Colin Forshaw, production operations manager at SUEZ said: “We are in the consultation stage over reviewing the current household waste recycling centre (HWRC) services, whilst keeping all five sites open and available to the public.
“We are not anticipating a reduction in recycling if these changes are introduced.”
Green party Aberdeen co-convener Guy Ingerson said: “This is scandalous.
“Instead of spending £150million on the incinerator, we should have spent this money on expanding our recycling capacity, creating new waste management jobs and invested in the alternatives.”
Aberdeen Friends of the Earth coordinator Gregor McAbery said: “It is never good to read of proposed job losses anywhere, but it is very concerning to hear that staffing at recycling centres may be reduced and opening hours limited.”
A council spokeswoman said: “We continue to carry out our waste and recycling programme in line with agreed levels of service and the provision of HRWCs will continue to be provided across the city with most sites unaffected by this proposal.”
