Aberdeen man jailed after threatening to throw his ex-girlfriend out a window

An Aberdeen dad has been jailed for 14 months after threatening to throw his estranged girlfriend out of a first floor window.

Rhyan Potts attacked the woman, who he had been in an on-off relationship with for four years, earlier this month.

On June 7, the 23-year-old forced his way into the woman’s flat through her kitchen window despite a non-harassment order banning him from contacting her.

Fiscal depute Callum Thomson told Aberdeen Sheriff Court: “She tried to phone the police and he took her phone and threw it on the ground.”

The woman managed to get out of the flat with her young son and gave him to a neighbour while she went to a nearby chemist to call the police.

But the court heard she then went back into the flat and began shouting for help from the bedroom.

Mr Thomson said Potts grabbed her by the hair and threatened to throw her out the window.

He added: “Potts punched her twice in the face and she fell over. He then bit her on the back.”

Two days earlier, Potts, of Gort Road, Aberdeen, had entered the property in the early hours through the window and had threatened to kill the woman.

Solicitor David Sutherland said his client had “seen the error of his ways”.

Potts also admitted robbing a Good Samaritan at knifepoint last October.

The court heard Potts punched the man in the face, breaking his glasses, after he had gone to his home to fetch him money.

He had done so having heard Potts and his female companion hadn’t eaten that day.

After a struggle Potts brandished a six-inch knife and stole the man’s rucksack.

Sheriff Andrew Miller said social workers had reported Potts was making progress in a court-ordered anti-domestic abuse training course from previous offences.

“This, and your very early guilty plea, have been taken into account,” he said.

Potts was jailed for 14 months and remains banned from approaching or contacting his ex-girlfriend for three years.
