Aberdeen council leaders are aiming to attract high-level delegates from across the world to the city for a climate change conference.
Douglas Lumsden and Jenny Laing have jointly written to energy secretary Greg Clark, declaring the authority would be “proud to host” the UN climate change conference at the new £333million P&J Live.
With the major global event being staged in Britain, Aberdeen council bosses believe the new site would be an ideal location.
On schedule to be completed this autumn, the arena will include a 15,000-seat arena and onsite hotels, which will be heated by a green fuel plant.
In their letter to Mr Clark, the duo have argued that, with the site’s close proximity to the airport and bypass, the venue would be “easily accessible by global visitors”.
It reads: “The UN climate change conference is an event we would be proud to host and we have been proposing for some time that Aberdeen should be considered as the main conference hub, should the UK be successful.
“We were delighted to hear that the UK has now been confirmed [as the host country] and we want to formally express both our interest in, and the city’s credentials to, host the main conference.
“There is no other facility like P&J Live and it symbolises what Aberdeen is famous for – international business, innovation, energy diversification.”
The department of business, energy and industrial strategy were contacted for comment.
